Why tech work counts as industrial training for your course

Office Technology and Management trains you for records management, office administration, business communication and information processing. Real offices now do all of that digitally: shared drives instead of filing cabinets, online forms instead of paper, and AI tools for first drafts. A placement where you run those systems for a real organisation is exactly what an OTM programme is preparing you for.

Check with your SIWES coordinator first

OTM and secretarial departments generally accept any organisation where you do supervised office and administrative work. Tell your coordinator you will handle records management, document production and office administration in a digital office, and show the project list below.

What you would actually do

Real work for real clients, reviewed by a mentor every week. Each project runs inside one of our departments.

Digitise and organise records

Scan, name, file and index paper records into a shared drive with a clear folder structure and access rules, then document the system for staff.

Document and presentation production

Produce letters, memos, reports and slide decks in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace to the organisation's house style.

Online forms and scheduling

Replace a paper process with Google Forms and Sheets, and manage shared calendars and meeting bookings for a team.

Basic Internet & AI Studies department

AI-assisted admin

Use ChatGPT or Gemini to draft letters, summarise long documents and prepare minutes, checking every output before it is sent.

What your logbook could say

Weak entries describe attendance. Strong entries describe work your supervisor can sign honestly. These are examples of the kind of entry this placement produces.

Weak: Did typing work in the office.
Strong: Typed and formatted 12 admission letters in Microsoft Word using mail merge from an Excel list, proofread them against the register and filed signed copies in the shared drive.
Weak: Filed documents.
Strong: Scanned 150 student registration forms, renamed them by matric number, filed them in a shared Google Drive folder, and built an index sheet so any form can be found in under a minute.

More on this in our guide to SIWES logbook mistakes and how to fix them.

On site or online, and what each costs

On site at a Tech Faculty centre

No separate placement fee. On Learn & Pay you pay your department's regular course fee, from ₦50,000, with up to 50% off for SIWES students. On Tutor & Earn, if you are already skilled enough to teach, we pay you.

Find a centre near you

Online with Virtual SIWES

₦45,000 for your full IT, plus ₦15,000 for logbook signing, stamping and two-way courier delivery. Virtual SIWES is charged because it covers online supervision and the waybill.

On-site suits OTM best, because office administration is easiest to learn inside a working office. A virtual placement is possible for document production, digital records and AI-assisted admin, and the logbook service handles signing and stamping by courier.

  • Logbook reviewed, signed and stamped, with courier pickup and return to your city

Near one of our campuses? On-site SIWES has no placement fee. Only Virtual SIWES is charged, because it covers the waybill and online supervision.

Or reserve now and pay by transfer

We use your details only to send what you asked for. No spam.

Office Technology & Management SIWES questions

Where can OTM students do SIWES in Nigeria?

In any organisation where you do supervised office and administrative work: schools, hospitals, businesses, government offices and training institutes. Choose one that uses digital tools, so your logbook shows modern office skills.

What will an OTM student do during SIWES at Tech Faculty NG?

Digitise and organise records, produce documents and presentations, run online forms and scheduling, design office graphics and use AI tools for routine admin, all supervised and logged weekly.

Do I need a laptop?

Not for on-site placement, because you work on the office computers at our centres. For a virtual placement you need a laptop and internet; our tech store sells tested student laptops with part-payment options if that is the blocker.

Will I learn AI tools during SIWES?

Yes. You use AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini to draft, summarise and organise office work, and you learn to check their output before anything is sent, which is how employers expect them to be used.
