How to Find a Tech SIWES Placement in Nigeria (2026 Student Guide)

Finding a good tech SIWES placement in Nigeria is harder than passing your courses — and matters more for your career. Most students settle for whatever cyber café or "computer school" accepts them. This guide will help you do better.

First, understand what SIWES really is

SIWES (Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme) is a 4–6 month mandatory industrial training programme funded by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). In tech, it is your first real chance to:

• Sit inside a working company.
• Ship something on a real codebase or data pipeline.
• Build a professional reference before you graduate.

Get it right and you can walk into a full-time job offer after NYSC. Get it wrong and you waste six months photocopying documents.

Where to actually look (2026)

Tier 1 — Serious tech companies

• Fintechs: Flutterwave, Moniepoint, Paystack, Kuda, Opay, PalmPay.
• Big tech (Nigeria offices): Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon.
• Banks (tech departments): GTCO, Access, Zenith, UBA.
• Enterprise SIs: CWG, Interswitch, MainOne (Equinix), Layer3, Digital Encode.

Tier 2 — Startups and studios

Nigerian startups (Bumpa, Renmoney, ThriveAgric, ProjectPhoenix, etc.) often love SIWES students because you cost less and can grow into a full-time role.

Tier 3 — Training providers (do this if Tier 1 & 2 fail)

Places like Tech Faculty run an industrial training programme with our Learn & Pay and Tutor & Earn tracks — you actually build software or teach juniors, not push paper.

The application system that works

1. Build a 1-page CV. Even with no experience — list your school projects, GitHub, and any online course completions.
2. Write a short, specific email.
   "I am a 300-level Computer Science student at UNIZIK looking for a SIWES placement between August 2026 and January 2027. I have built X and I am strong in Y. Can I attach my CV?"
3. Send 30 emails in one week. Not 3. Not 300. 30 well-researched ones.
4. Follow up on LinkedIn. Find the CTO, engineering manager, or people ops lead. Send a polite DM referencing your email.
5. Have an ITF Form 8 ready. Companies will not process you without it.

What to ask before accepting

• Will I be assigned to a real project or team?
• Who will be my supervisor?
• Will I get a stipend? (Even ₦20k/month matters.)
• Can I attend team meetings and code reviews?
• Will I get an end-of-programme letter?

If they cannot answer these, keep looking.

Turn SIWES into a job offer

• Ship one thing you can demo — a feature, a dashboard, an internal tool.
• Write clean weekly logbook entries — many companies read them.
• Ask, in month 4: "What would I need to prove to be considered for a role after NYSC?"
• Stay in touch after IT ends. Send a monthly progress email.
