SIWES in AI and Data Science: How to Land a Tech Placement in 2026

Every session, thousands of Nigerian students carry SIWES letters to companies that have no idea what to do with them, and end up photocopying documents for six months. The students who spend their industrial training writing code and analysing data are not luckier. They apply differently.

Start twelve weeks early

The single biggest predictor of a good placement is timing. Companies with structured tech internships fill slots long before the semester ends. Begin applying three months before your attachment window opens.

Where tech placements actually exist

• Software companies and startups — the best technical exposure, often the smallest stipend
• Bank and fintech technology departments — structured, competitive, well paid
• Telecom and ISP technical units — strong for networking and infrastructure
• Hospitals, schools and government MDAs — data and systems work, easier to secure
• Training institutes — where you both learn and assist in delivery
• Remote placements — increasingly accepted, and they widen your options enormously

Build the one thing that gets you picked

Before you apply, ship a small project relevant to the role: a dashboard, a working web app, or a simple model with a clear README. A student with a link outranks a student with a letter. This takes two weekends and changes the entire process.

Write an application that gets answered

Attach your letter, but lead the email with three sentences: who you are, what you built, and what you want to do for them. Send to a named person, follow up once after five working days, and apply to at least twenty organisations. Placement is a numbers game with a quality filter.

During the placement

Ask for a real task in week one. If you are given nothing, propose something: automate a report, clean a dataset, build an internal page.

Keep your logbook daily. Not weekly. Supervisors sign what they can verify, and the logbook is what your assessor grades.

Document everything you build. Screenshots, code, before-and-after numbers. This becomes your graduate portfolio.

Behave like staff. Punctuality and follow-through are why interns get retained in Nigeria far more often than raw brilliance.

Getting the ITF allowance right

Register on the ITF portal, keep every form, confirm your bank details match your registration exactly, and submit your documentation at the deadline rather than after it. Most delayed allowances trace back to a mismatch a student could have fixed in five minutes.

Convert IT into an offer

In your final two weeks, write a one-page summary of what you built and the value it created, present it to your supervisor, and ask directly whether a role or contract work is available after your programme. Very few students ask. That is precisely why it works.
