"How much does a React developer earn in Nigeria?" is the most-asked question in our WhatsApp community — and most articles answering it are three years stale. Here's the real 2026 picture, based on offers our Tech Faculty alumni closed between January and June, plus verified data from Nigerian recruiters we work with (TalentQL, Andela, Big Cabal, Moniepoint).

Why the range is so wide
Three variables decide where in the band you land:
1. Employer type
A React developer at a Lagos agency building marketing sites earns half of one at a YC-backed Nigerian fintech shipping to millions of users. Same job title, different world.
2. Your stack depth
"React" alone in 2026 pays juniorly. The senior band requires:
- TypeScript (non-negotiable)
- Next.js 15 / React Server Components
- Testing (Vitest, Playwright)
- State management beyond useState (TanStack Query, Zustand, Redux Toolkit)
- One backend: Node.js, tRPC, or a real understanding of the API you consume
3. Remote-readiness
Async communication, clean PRs, self-driven task breakdown. Nigerian developers lose remote offers on this more than on code.
Location inside Nigeria
Lagos still pays 20–30% more than Abuja for local roles, and 40–60% more than Port Harcourt, Enugu, or Nnewi. But if you land remote work, location stops mattering — which is why 70% of our senior alumni relocated back to their home states after going remote.
What moves you from junior to mid faster
In our data, the developers who broke ₦1M/month within 18 months of graduating all did three things:
- Shipped a real production app used by at least 500 people (not a portfolio site).
- Contributed to an open-source repo with 1k+ stars.
- Wrote publicly — even 6 short technical posts on Dev.to or Hashnode.

What moves you from mid to senior
Stop being just "a React developer." Own an area:
- Performance — Core Web Vitals, bundle analysis, RSC streaming
- DX / tooling — build systems, monorepos, CI
- Design systems — Radix + Tailwind + a11y at scale
- Product engineering — writing PRDs, running experiments, talking to users
Any one of these, done well, is a ₦1M/month raise.
