How to Hire Developers in Nigeria (2026): Rates & Vetting
How to Hire Developers in Nigeria (2026): Rates, Vetting & Retention
By Bill Achusim · Jun 22, 2026
If you're a founder — Nigerian or foreign — trying to hire developers in Nigeria in 2026, this is the practical, no-nonsense playbook. Nigerian developer talent is world-class, but the hiring pitfalls are specific. Here's what we've learned running Tech Faculty and placing 300+ engineers into Nigerian and remote roles.
What Nigerian developers actually cost in 2026
Full-time in-house rates, all-in cost per month:
| Role | Junior | Mid | Senior | |---|---|---|---| | Frontend (React/Next) | ₦350k – 700k | ₦900k – 1.6M | ₦2M – 4M | | Backend (Node/Python) | ₦400k – 800k | ₦1M – 1.8M | ₦2.2M – 4.5M | | Full-stack | ₦450k – 900k | ₦1.1M – 2M | ₦2.5M – 5M | | Mobile (React Native/Flutter) | ₦400k – 800k | ₦1M – 1.8M | ₦2.2M – 4M | | DevOps / SRE | ₦500k – 1M | ₦1.3M – 2.5M | ₦3M – 6M | | Data engineer | ₦500k – 1M | ₦1.3M – 2.5M | ₦3M – 6M |
Contract / project rates: ₦8,000 – ₦45,000/hour depending on level. Anything above ₦50k/hr, the person is almost always available for full-time roles instead.
Where to source (in order of hit rate for founders)
- Referrals from developers you already trust — highest quality, lowest cost
- Tech Faculty, Semicolon, AltSchool alumni networks — pre-vetted
- Andela Talent Cloud, TalentQL, Terawork — vetted marketplaces, pay a premium
- LinkedIn direct search — works, takes patience
- Nigerian tech Twitter / Discord communities
- Jobberman, MyJobMag — high volume, low signal; use only with clear filters
Avoid Upwork/Fiverr for full-time hires — you'll pay more for less commitment.
A vetting process that works
A 4-stage funnel that keeps false positives out:
- Written screen (30 min) — 3 questions about their most recent project. Fake CVs die here.
- Take-home (4–8 hours, paid ₦20k–50k) — a scoped, real-shaped problem. Paying signals seriousness both ways.
- Live pairing (60 min) — extend or debug their take-home. This catches ghost-writers.
- Values / async call (30 min) — how they communicate is how they'll work.
Skip LeetCode gauntlets for anything below staff level. They filter for the wrong signal in Nigerian context.
Contract structures (Nigerian legal reality)
- Full-time employee — you owe PAYE, pension (RSA), NHF, NSITF, ITF. Budget +18–22% on top of gross.
- Consultant / independent contractor — cleaner, but be careful: the FIRS looks at working patterns, not just contract wording. If your "consultant" works only for you 40 hrs/week, tax authorities may reclassify.
- Foreign entity hiring from Nigeria: use Deel, Remote.com, or Rippling. Do not try to pay via Western Union — it burns candidates.
Retention: why Nigerian developers actually leave
In our exit-interview data across 2024–2026:
- Career growth stalled (46%) — no clear promotion path
- Learning stagnation (22%) — legacy stack, no new challenges
- Pay fell behind USD-denominated peers (18%)
- Bad manager (10%)
- Relocation / study abroad (4%)
Salary is rarely #1. It's growth. Fix that and you'll keep senior Nigerian devs for 4+ years.
Pitfalls that burn foreign founders
- Underestimating the pay gap between "Nigerian rates" (marketing myth) and real market rates
- Hiring on a title inflation (someone calling themselves senior with 18 months of experience)
- Ignoring timezone — Lagos is 5–8 hours ahead of US; plan overlap deliberately
- Paying late, even once — your reputation dies on Nigerian tech Twitter in 48 hours
- Contracts written under US/UK law with no local counsel review
