A Security Operations Center (SOC) analyst is the person watching alerts, hunting threats, and stopping attackers before they hurt a business. In Nigeria — where fintechs, telcos, and government agencies are under constant attack — SOC analysts are one of the fastest-growing tech roles of 2026.
This guide is a practical roadmap: what to learn, what to skip, and how to actually get hired.
What a SOC analyst really does
- Monitors security alerts in a SIEM (Splunk, Wazuh, Sentinel).
- Investigates suspicious logins, malware alerts, and phishing reports.
- Triages incidents and escalates the serious ones.
- Writes reports, runs playbooks, and helps improve detection rules.
It is a shift-based role in most Nigerian banks and MSSPs — expect night rotations early in your career.
Skills you actually need
Technical
- Networking basics — TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, firewalls.
- Windows & Linux fundamentals — enough to read logs and run commands.
